The lockdown helped me with something that I wanted to achieve a long time ago – to know how to crochet. But the reason why I learned crocheting now is my sweet little pea’s arrivalš¤°š». Now almost every day, I spend a few minutes to search for easy but interesting crochet patterns. And recently, I found an adorable pattern to crochet baby mittens.
What excited me to crochet the Baby Mittens?
For my baby
The first piece I crocheted was theĀ baby booties. I was super thrilled seeing how it turned out! With that, I was left motivated to crochet as many more tiny pieces I can, before the baby arrives. To pair with the booties, mittens and a cap was a great idea.
A gift to a friend’s newborn
Also, I wanted to use this newly learned skill to create cute gifts for other lovely people in my life. I used the first opportunity to create a handmade greeting card with crochet flowers for a friend’s birthday! And as it was the lockdown period, I had to post it to her instead of giving it in person (which made receiving the card in old school style, and even more special).
After a few more days, we noticed an ease in restrictions in the country. We were allowed to meet in small groups with social distancing measures. So we were very keen to meet this friend who recently became a new mom, whom we hadn’t seen since she delivered the adorable little munchkin (only seen in photos she had shared). I thought going to meet the baby with handmade mittens will make my friend happy as well, so I calculated the days left to meet and started crocheting the mittens.
Where did I find the baby mitten pattern to crochet?
It took a couple of days for me to figure out which pattern should I use because finding the easiest and yet cute-looking crochet baby mitten wasn’t as simple as I thought.
UK or US terms
If you’ve been crocheting for a while, you will know that there are the UK crochet terms and there are the US terms! When you have been used to one of the two styles, the other could be confusing unless the stitches are explained clearly in the tutorial.
Online Channels for crochet patterns
I went about searching for patterns with clarity and simplicity on Etsy, YouTube and Pinterest.
Etsy has adorable patterns, however, its mostly available in PDF formats. If you’re at a beginner level in crochet like I’m, you’d prefer a video guide over PDF as it is more convenient to understand the change in stitches.
Pinterest with its impressive images lead you to great blogs, but again, all I found were only written patterns without videos.
Finally, the best baby mitten crochet pattern was available on YouTube in a 33-minute long video, with well-explained rounds and stitches. It’s a YouTube channel named Last Minute Laura who is from Canada, a country that inspires cosy patterns. She makes some very interesting videos. At the end of this article, I’m leaving the ‘baby mittens pattern’ link for you to check.
PS – This is how I made it easier to follow the crochet pattern
Writing short notes myself while watching the video makes the pattern easier to understand and reduces the number of times I’ve to replay the video.
The time it took to crochet the baby mittens
I’ve crocheted two pairs of mittens so far, one pair for my little human and the other for my friend’s baby. As I don’t crochet in one go and keep some time aside for this craft every day, the first set of mittens took 3-4 days to be ready.
Before I knew, I had picked up on speed! Crocheting the second pair of baby mittens just took 2 evenings.
The video suggests that mittens could be ready in half-hour or so, and I think it is possible after you have crocheted a few pair of mittens.
Yarn and Crochet Hook that I used
With the idea to support local businesses, I bought the cotton yarns from a local store in Dublin calledĀ Winnie the woolshop (they offer amazing deals). But if you live elsewhere and can’t source the crochet yarns locally thenĀ AmazonĀ is your place to go!Ā
I bought an amazing set ofĀ bamboo crochet hooks on AmazonĀ because this was something I couldn’t find locally.Ā
After the crocheting the baby mittens, I’ve started making the baby hat (well, winter is soon approaching!). What about you? I’ll love to know your crochet adventures.
