Munch Cafe Balally – Munch by Munasabat Cakes – Cafe near Dundrum
After my class that week, I was ready to go home, put my feet up and continue reading the book ‘Flights’. It was that intriguing book suggested by our book club member from Poland. But then, I received a message from the husband saying he is stepping out for lunch and can use my company for a lovely time, ha! 😉
Calculating the time I will take to reach Dundrum, we decided he starts his lunch and I will join for coffee. Taking long lunch breaks on workdays isn’t an easy thing you see.
I was heading the same direction to go home, so I got on the tram and met him at the Balally Luas stop. It was a beautiful day with soft chills and some sunshine. He had buzzed me saying Munch is where he is sitting with his sandwich and a small cup of couscous.
Munch is this cute and tiny coffee corner bang at the Luas stop. I stepped out of the tram, looked around after tagging off my travel card and there I see him standing outside the cafe.
My husband had visited this place a couple of times with his colleagues and was sure that I will enjoy their Turkish coffee a lot. I was curious, why he thinks that!
He entered the cafe again, this time with me and the host gave a welcoming smile saying ‘good to see you again!’ Thinking of it, I feel that was a record breaking re-visit to a cafe one can have. In no time we were seated at the frontmost table with close proximity to the small bookshelf. Having a glance there and then at the vibrant cushion covers, I was ready to order.
This cafe is run by a wonderful host who can hold some very interesting conversations. Almost everyone who came there ended up in a lovely little chat with her. I learned that she has Libyan roots and deep admiration for Turkey, something that is noticeable is the glorious interiors of this place.
I went for the falafel and halloumi wrap which is served with a little cup of couscous and a portion of crisps (if you’ve lived in Ireland you know, chips are fries and not a packet of Lays!). Of course, I ordered Turkish coffee and he went for double espresso shots.
First came our drinks and I spent a few minutes fascinated and trying to capture the best of this beauty. Sufi music playing in the background took my coffee experience so many levels up. She explained to me how to consume it and how to read my fortune from the remains of coffee decoction in my cup, after sipping it all. My fortune is playing hide and seek I think because nothing stood clear to me or that’s what is in store – a total mess!
Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed my coffee and chunk of Turkish delight, talking about the beautiful coffee set it was served in. They have brought it from Turkey. Later, I munched the wholesome wrap. Satiated, I sat there reading Flight, long after husband returned to work. Also, got a chance to discuss sufi music and yoga with the cafe owner.
Now, I regularly visit Munch sometime for my hot drink or snack, but always for a good time. If you’ve been here and chatted with the owner, share your story! Isn’t it a friendly little corner in Balally?

It is a cute sit-down cafe with small tables for 2 to 4 people and long benches for a slightly bigger group. You can find tables inside and outside the cafe. On a sunny day, you know which sit to take.
They also serve coffee and food for takeaway. Many working people usually order coffee and sandwich to-go from Munch cafe. My advice is to sit and enjoy the place and the food.
